New Joint Venture to Build
MTU Engines in China

MTU Yuchai Power Co. Ltd. has been officially registered in China as a joint venture between MTU Friedrichshafen and the Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Company Ltd. (GYMCL). MTU Friedrichshafen, a Rolls-Royce Power Systems subsidiary, and GYMCL, a subsidiary of China Yuchai International Ltd., first agreed to forge the partnership in February 2016.

The joint venture is based in Yulin and will build MTU Series 4000 engines, suitable for use in the oil and gas and power generation industries.


DAV MX CircSub Drill Provides
Unprecedented Look into Earth’s Crust

The DAV MX CircSub from Churchill Drilling Tools was selected for the world’s deepest and hottest geothermal borehole in the Iceland Deep Drilling Project (IDDP) on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

The IDDP well will provide clean, renewable energy by using supercritical steam heated by the Earth’s magma.

Drilling involved the deepening of an existing geothermal borehole to a depth of 5 km. The IDDP team encountered temperatures of 427° C at a depth of 4,659 m, simultaneously creating the deepest and hottest ever geothermal borehole and encountering supercritical conditions at a shallower depth than anticipated. Samples were taken to the surface to ascertain fluid chemistry.


MacArtney Delivers Multibeam
Survey System for Hamburg

The Hamburg Port Authority took delivery of the third integrated dual-head multibeam echosounder survey system from MacArtney for hydrographic survey applications. This solution comprises: the Teledyne RESON SeaBat T20-R, a Valeport SWiFT sound velocity profiler and a Valeport UltraSV.

Subsea Power Hub
Now Fully Operational

EC-OG’s Subsea Power Hub (SPH) ocean current energy conversion system is now fully operational, being tested at the European Marine Energy Centre’s Shapinsay Sound test site. The next step is to leave the SPH running autonomously with wireless data monitoring during the summer.

The system uses a marine energy convertor coupled directly to a lithium-based energy storage system.


Wärtsilä Making Agreements with Shipyards
On Ballast Water Management

Wärtsilä is in the process of signing agreements with a number of major shipyards, the latest being Keppel Shipyard Ltd. of Singapore. The agreements are intended to establish cooperation and communication in relation to the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Convention for Ballast Water Management, which is due to enter into force this September.

The shared goal of the parties is to provide shipowners and operators with all necessary information and assistance concerning ballast water management systems (BWMS).

Wärtsilä’s Aquarius BWMS technology has been type approved for the IMO regulations, which address the issue of invasive aquatic species being carried in ships’ ballast water.


STR Adds Automated
Sound Velocity Profiling System

Subsea Technology & Rentals Ltd. (STR) has taken on the new automated sound velocity profiling system developed by Teledyne Oceanscience using Valeport’s rapidSV profiler.

Teledyne’s rapidCAST System has the ability to collect and transmit survey data without having to recover the probe on board at the end of each cast. It uses the latest rapidSV profiler with Bluetooth wireless telemetry to automatically upload each SV profile to the survey PC on the completion of each cast.


Next Geosolutions Acquires
RMS Submarine Ltd.

The geoscience and engineering service provider Next Geosolutions has acquired the U.K.-based marine resource solutions company RMS Submarine Ltd. This enables Next Geosolutions to focus on the operations and maintenance market for both the cables and renewables industries and represents a strengthening of its presence in the North Sea and Baltic region.

Following the acquisition, up to five new onshore positions and up to 20 offshore roles are likely to be created.


Trials Complete for COBRA
Emergency Rebreather System

JFD has successfully completed rigorous trials on its new COBRA (Compact Bailout Rebreathing Apparatus) system, verifying its capability and performance to CE Mark status.

COBRA is the only commercial emergency rebreather system in the world to have been granted CE Marking status to NORSOK U101 (Diving Respiratory Equipment) and EN14143 (Self Contained Rebreathing Apparatus), leading the way in terms of safety and functionality, according to the company.

COBRA was developed by JFD in response to a crucial need for bailout technology that can support the depth requirements and excursion durations of new-generation diving operations.


Evoqua to Expand Production of
Ballast Water Treatment Systems

Evoqua Water Technologies is upgrading its SeaCURE system production facility in Caldicot, Wales, to meet market demand for ballast water treatment systems as shipowners look to comply with the entry into force of the Ballast Water Management Convention in September.

The upgrade will enable Evoqua to expand production of fully assembled SeaCURE BWTS skids. In addition to the expanded capabilities in Caldicot, additional production capacity will be provided by partners who will be licensed to build the SeaCURE system.


Hydrex to Add Workshops
And Offices to Asiadok Site

Antwerp Port Authority has supported Hydrex Underwater Technologies’ plan to expand its existing site on Asiadok on the River Scheldt with new workshops and offices. Hydrex has also refurbished its dive support workboats and increased its manpower by 25 percent to strengthen its diver-technician capability. The refurbished facility incorporates a diver training center and a workshop for underwater repairs.


New Subsidiary Location
For Visedo in Hong Kong

Visedo seeks to hasten the transition to hybrid and electric marine vessels, including ferries, across Asia-Pacific with the opening of a new office in Hong Kong, which will assist Visedo’s expansion into emerging markets across the region.

This follows the company’s signing of a letter of intent with Beijing Capital Investment to help Visedo access China’s booming electric vehicles market.


LJMU Maritime Centre Offers
New Training Courses

A new portfolio of STCW (Standards on Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) and bespoke training courses has been launched by Liverpool John Moores University’s (LJMU) Maritime Centre, delivered through the Maritime Knowledge Hub, which is operated in partnership with Mersey Maritime, the representative body for the maritime sector in northwest England. It covers courses for all ranks and departments of commercial ships, superyachts and workboats utilizing the center’s bridge, engine and communication simulators.

The university also plans to offer bespoke training for senior officers in the Merchant Navy, including courses on ballast water management and engine and bridge resource management.


Two Damen Companies
Unite for Ballast Water Solutions

Damen Green Solutions and Damen Shiprepair & Conversion are combining their specific skill sets to offer shipowners a smoother transition toward compliance with the IMO’s Ballast Water Management Convention. This means an entire ballast water treatment system retrofit can be handled in one contract.


Aquabotix Exceeds Target
Max Subscription for IPO

In April, UUV Aquabotix Ltd. announced that it was undertaking an initial public offering (IPO) on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). The maximum subscription under the IPO was set at $7 million AUD (about $5.5 million USD).

This max was exceeded, and the IPO closed substantially oversubscribed. Investors will be advised if and how their applications for shares have been scaled back.

Aquabotix will be the first dedicated underwater drone publicly traded company globally, the company said.


Mission Control Centre Open
For ASView Development

ASV Global’s Mission Control Centre is now open at the company’s headquarters in Portchester, England, for ongoing development of the ASView autonomous vessel control system. The center can operate and monitor the company’s fleet of ASVs all over the world using satellite

communication links and will also be used for operator training and simulation exercises.
