25 Years Ago 1988.
About $1.6 billion worth of seafood was sold to overseas markets, an increase of almost 48 million pounds, or more than $290 million, from the previous year. ... A court ruling upheld federal regulations mandating fishermen use special devices to reduce trawl times to prevent the drowning of sea turtles. Failure to comply could have meant up to $10,000 in fines. ... A new major gas field was found in the Mobile area offshore Mississippi and Alabama. Located in Mobile Block 904, the well was drilled to a depth of 22,400 feet.

15 Years Ago 1998.
NOAA’s Administrator Director Dr. James Baker appointed a Science Advisory Board to assist the agency by providing an understanding of scientific issues, including weather forecasting and fishery stewardship. ... Scientists from the French Polar Institute announced a new world record for deep-sea piston coring. The core measured 55.4 meters and was retrieved June 25 from the Indonesian archipelago south of the island of Celebes at a depth of 2,000 meters. ... The U.S. House of Representatives Security Committee and the Senate Armed Services Committee approved funding for five capital ships, a build rate that reduced the Navy to a fleet of 200 or fewer ships.

10 Years Ago 2003.
Approval for a study of offshore oil and gas reserves in federal waters was passed in the U.S. Senate as part of a bill aimed at reducing U.S. dependence on foreign oil. Opponents argued that the inventory could lay the groundwork for overturning the ban on drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf. ... The University of Rhode Island ordered 56 units of the deepwater Doppler Current Sensor to observe the deep-ocean interior currents above the benthic boundary layer. ... In November 2000, a high mortality rate of the black-lip pearl oysters was reported in Manihiki Lagoon, Fiji. The South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission announced a project to help rebuild the multimillion-dollar habitat.
