US Hydro 2011 Conference
The U.S. Hydro 2011 Conference, sponsored by The Hydrographic Society of America (THSOA), will be held from April 25 through 28 in Tampa, Florida. U.S. Hydro 2011 is a continuation of the series of hydrographic conferences that alternate between the United States and Canada. This is the thirteenth U.S. Hydro conference and follows the very successful U.S. Hydro 2009, held in Norfolk, Virginia, conference organizers said.

With plenty of water, sand and sunshine, Tampa is a west Florida coast community with inherent Southern charm, the organizers said. The site of the conference, the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel, is a luxury waterfront hotel and marina situated along the Channel Riverwalk overlooking Tampa Bay in the heart of downtown.

Conference Events
The conference will include technical sessions and a poster session on the latest developments and applications in hydrographic surveying, data management, electronic charting and related topics.

In addition to the technical papers, the conference will feature an extensive series of workshops, social programs, an exhibition hall and a student outreach program.

Workshops being offered will cover topics such as side scan sonar, vertical datums, dredge volumes, tides, multibeam sonar and uncertainty management in hydrography. All workshops are free of charge to conference registrants, but seating space is limited.

This year, THSOA expects to host 24 students for its student outreach program, which has been taking place since U.S. Hydro 2003. Attending the conference provides the students with the chance to interact with professional hydrographers and vendors, both in the exhibit hall and at the various on-the-water demonstrations.

At the student luncheon, participants learn about university graduate programs as well as internships and employment opportunities at government agencies and in the private sector.

The conference registration fee includes admission to technical sessions and workshops, the exhibit hall, two hosted receptions (a registration icebreaker and an exhibitor’s social), and the traditional Wednesday evening social at Tampa’s Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City. One-day registrations do not include the social functions.

Accompanying Persons’ Program
When delegates register they may also register accompanying persons at no additional cost. Accompanying persons are welcome in the exhibition hall, but they must purchase additional tickets for the exhibitor social, Wednesday’s buffet social and the accompanying persons’ program.

On Monday, the accompanying persons’ program will hold a welcome at the Tampa Bay History Center, and on Tuesday the group will travel to Sarasota, Florida, to visit the John and Mable Ringling estate. The day will also feature lunch in downtown Sarasota at St. Armand’s Circle and shopping.

Exhibition
More than 50 exhibitors of hydrographic survey equipment and services are expected to be on hand. Exhibits will be open from April 26 through 28. Exhibitors are expected to conduct on-the-water demonstrations at the Marriott Waterside’s marina.

Detailed information and a conference registration form can be found at www.thsoa.org.
